GREENLAND GRAF VOL.2013.2; 3911 NEEDS A HERO

In my inbox - 1, then they came four. 1st I thought Cuban-like flag, now I think Flag of the Confederate States of America. And what does Confederate mean anyway...well, that is 1861-1863, times when districts like Sisimiut had less then 1000 ppl. And so am I..... so off the track.

STOKED VOL.2 - URBAN GREENLAND // SK8PARK QINNGORPUT, NUUK

August 25th, 2012 the NGO Urban Greenland inaugurated 1st SK8bowl in Sisimiut, Greenland - http://urbangreenland.wordpress.com/2013/04/27/grandopening/ + u can read (in danish) about the build here http://urbangreenland.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/evaluering1.pdf.

This year #now, Urban Greenland raised the bar and completed QINNGORPUT street oriented SK8PARK. Qinngorput, meaning "the bottom of our fjord", used to be a camping site, later suburb, now integrated part of capital city Nuuk.

QINNGORPUT SK8PARK has again only been possible through solid work by the "international steering commitee" headed by Natalia Genét. This build is a parthership with PIVOTECH DK, AK Montage, Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq/Municipality and Saviminilerinermik Ilinniarfik (Vocational Training School).

The build is documented here: http://urbangreenland.wordpress.com/street-skatepark-qinngorput/

CONTINUING SAGA OF ARCTIC STREET ART

Uvikkait Dome Youth House Kuujjuaq, Nunvaik by NuSchool Design Agency. July 2013.

The Uvikkait Dome is a typical Arctic youth centre, organizing activities for local youth. Play, sports, community, education or regular hangout. Kuujjuaq is the largest Inuit community in Nunavik with approx 2400 citizens. This is, I think, 3rd time NUSCHOOL's residency in this capital. (Image: courtesy NUSCHOOL Design.)

YOUTH/EDUCATION - COMMUNICATING COMMUNITY

from the top of my head....

#glpol I take my hat off (again) to Greenland, dealing with youth-education contradition!

Workin' with youth, space and skills (visions & creativity) for now about 10y (in DK & KN), I write this, triggered by - aknowledging Alex Nørskov's press release in Sermitsiaq http://sermitsiaq.ag/node/152400 re youth challenges in vocational training schools = challenges in primary school, challenges in educational training = youth > < education contradition nowadays. HAT OFF FOR CUTTING THROUGH.

CONTRADITIONS AND EVERYDAY LIFE
Education, from youth perspective particularly, seems to be the mantra lingua of everyday life "from Cape Horn to Upernavik". Nobody + no body(!) seems to ask the question, what is education to us today and what is at stake choosing one and e.g. the environment in which education is rolled out. I avoid the word global for a reason here - e.g. let's think about how this and that affects our everyday life; every day. To cut to the point, unlike formal education system, spaces like http://www.timiasimi.gl run by Kim Godtfredsen in Nuuk, Greenland - make and should maintain a voice in judging youth >< education contradition.

Take it like this: how would U be able to CHOOSE an education or, let's say activity for the next couple of years, incl. meaningless homework presented by egocentred ppl, sitting down and being talked to like a child again, being a statistical tool in a politicians view, building up anxiety 24/7towards supplemented knowledge ....etc. etc.?

The great point made by Alex Nørskov (Chairman of the Board at Vocational School in Nuuk) is, in my opinion, written in between lines -> recognizing how EDUCATION is not only a question of teachers and communicating knowledge but also a matter of communicating community i.e. instead of talkin' youth this and that, focusing on the space& time of transition between primary school and specialized training. We have to do something about it! What will we do about it, actually? What is relevant in our environment? What position do we posses in our living environment NOW? Important, missing link is, e.g. the LINES of TIMIASIMI.gl -> encompassing elements of nowness in doing education as space, time and everyday life.

Now, not knowing either Alex Nørskov or Kim Godtfredsen in person, I argue, that those two, in many ways are role models (and do not be mistaken by that!) and HAVE an opportunity to strengthen their desires WITH the youth e.g. making TIMIASIMI.gl a nationwide HEADSPACE where environment -> space, time and knowledge play a role. NOT a Danish or for that sake any other European "idea".

No - go ahead and develop what u got instead of copying e.g. the Danish Vocational School system or for that sake the Danish Education Debate. I, personally, rather GO ALL IN Greenlandic then copying something for the sake of pleasing personal, politically charged interests.

POLITICA/"POLITICAL" IN THE CAPITAL

#glvalg13 #qinersineq

The city is still full of political statements. What you see is a showcase from the Arctic graffiti-archive established in Y2K - courtesy of and copyright of Jakub Christensen M. All photos by author, except "Anaat taanuk" and full version "Ind- ud" of Knud Rasmussen - both by the artist know as John Doe & .... The timeline is constructed in following (narrative) order:

Colonial times: examples of street art found at the New Hernnhut station/later Univ. of Greenland. 1876 ship images and tags by Agparât a.k.a. Abraham. The flag is from the old center of Nuuk, right in the heart of the city, which only makes it a shocking sight for your eyes.

Ballot material: "Anaat taanuk", full version "In-Out" of Knud Rasmussen - both by the artist know as John Doe & .... + stencil of Knud Rasmussen found in the suburbs Nuussuaq. Very clever!

Urban guerrilla: in no way referring to the 1973 song by UK rock group Hawkind; this set of street art reflects the urban environment as a message-board, in particular cases as a local/extrovert "do with the past" -> in terms of the Norwegian/Danish priest Hans Egede claiming "sorry" to his fellow nuummiut ?!*. Followed by 9/11 contrast of "sorry", asking the public about the colonial in a sharp edged question. Or it's all about money, money, money - "Fight oligarchy" it states surrounded by devils/monkeys(?). That's when it gets political? Again, motives from the productions of John Doe & ...

Making our way through: the image of a hunter shooting danish chicken, the stencil stating "me" and a almost Tom Waits message from a father to his son; "I love you son. Father". This set of images reverts the whole story of political street art into a question of reflecting within ourselves; in space and everyday life.

...and when the ice melts away. We'll all get pre-war mustache ;-) . #glvalg13 #qinersineq
