TECHNOLOGIES CRÉATIVES

[Image: Drawing seals. JCM. Aqqusinersuaq/Nuuk 2008]

I've submitted preliminary title and description for:
Études/Inuit/Studies on "Creative Technologies / Technologies créatives" (Due December 2010)

___________ on technology of everyday life
My article explores a particular practice - ____________ - for its tactics of appropriation and production of space.
____________, presented through data collected during my fieldwork in 2006-2007, accentuates important meanings to everydayness, and challenges our perception of engagement with the spatial and temporal rhythms of lived environments, such as the city of Sisimiut, Greenland.

--------------------------------------------------------

Topic (i.e. ___________):
Guess what?

Keywords &-issues:
> Everyday - repetition or ongoing negotiation?
> ______ - body/_____ /terrain
> Creativity - performance, accordion of meaning
> Youth

Theoretical framework:
”Man must be everyday, or he will not be at all" (Henri Lefebvre - Critique of Everyday Life, vol.1).

- what the heck does he mean by that?

IN THE URBAN SPACE OF NUUK

[Image from event referred to in BKP's article - 2004, O4BAAJ, courtesy of KGH]

I'm posting this basically to say thank you to those who not only read but actually use what I write. Isn't that what this is all about?

Inuit urbains / Urban Inuit

Young Greenlanders in the urban space of Nuuk

by Birgit Kleist Pedersen (BKP) (Department of Language, Literature and Media,Ilisimatusarfik/University of Greenland).

This article is about young urban Greenlanders living in Nuuk, and how they depict themselves in selected lyrics and the feature film Eskimo Weekend (http://id.erudit.org/revue/etudinuit/2008/v32/n1/029821ar.html).

......."The underlying message from these young people, I believe, is that “sex, drugs and rockn’roll” may play an important role in their urban life, but the young people actually do reflect on the past, present and future in a responsible way" (Pedersen 2008, In: Études/Inuit/Studies, Volume 32, numéro 1, 2008, p. 91-105).

BluePrintForLife:"....Part of our program is about not only healing youth, but healing communities and bringing generation’s together. The residential school system has created many problems - one being that the life experience of parents , elders and youth is very different and that parenting techniques that were learned in the home or on the land were often lost......."

PLACE URBANITY

http://vimeo.com/2835339

Place Urbanity by Jeffrey Shaw (2001) from UNSW iCinema Centre on Vimeo.

I found this thought-provoking definition of urbanity. As you can hear and see it is from down under......what do you recon....

"The human being.....has a need to see, to hear, to touch, to taste and the need to gather these perceptions in a 'world'. To these anthropological needs which are socially elaborated (that is, sometimes separated, sometimes joined together, here compressed and there hypertrophied), can be added specific needs which are not satisfied by those commercial and cultural infrastructures which are somewhat parsimoniously take into account by planners. This refers to the need for creative activity, for the oeuvre (not only products and consumable material goods), of the need for information, symbolism, the imaginary and play" (Lefebvre 1996:147).

I think there are sequences where little bit of both appear in the video. Play and planning. As we zoom in and "zoom" around.

Today's input:
Ever heard of Extreme Greenland Mesh files?

"....FlightSim Greenland provides the registered users with Flight Simulator files related to Greenland.
To get access all you have to do is register as a user.

Flightsim.gl do not receive any fundings from others, and runs entirely by fundings from the owner. And the editors/authors are doing their great work wihtout any paying. And they're doing it just for you......"

TODAY'S

Lucie Idlout
Image embedded from http://www.lucieidlout.com/

-Read the Bio
"....The acoustic version, Angel Street, was discovered by the mayor of Iqaluit, Elisapee Sheutiapik, who championed to have the name of the street where the women's shelter is located renamed Angel Street. Lucie performed the song for Bev Oda and all the Provincial and Territorial Ministers of the Status of Women at a function announcing the renaming of city streets across the country to Angel Street. Several cities have taken it into consideration with Fredericton, NB already on board. Lucie has been amazed by the impact of the song. She wrote from the heart but had no idea that the song would become such a symbol of hope for women and communities across the country. Both versions hold very special meaning to her. The acoustic version of this song can be found in the following short documentary, A Place To Run To, which focuses on the issue of spousal abuse in the north: www.explore.org......."

Blending Northern Culture With Urban Sensibilities

” Hailing from Toronto, Ontario, Jonathan Cruz graduated from the illustration program at Sheridan College in 2004. From living in what he calls his second home, ‘the coldest place on earth’ — Iqaluit, Nunavut — Jonathan blends northern culture with his urban sensibilities in a style that fuses elements of collage, graphic street art, Inuit aesthetics and classical painting. He now lives in Los Angeles, California and attends the Art Center College of Design.”

Urban Rhythms

...."Rhythms differ from one another in their amplitude, in the energies they ferry and deploy, and in their frequency. Such differences, conveyed and reproduced by the rhythms which embody them, translate into intensity or strenght of anticipation, tension and action. All these factors interact with one another within the body, which is traversed by rhythms rather as the 'ether' is traversed by waves" (Lefebvre 1991:206).
